FAULT FINDING

Sometimes it is possible to identify a fault yourself, or at least isolate the problem so that inconvenience is minimised until an electrician can attend the fault.

This flowchart gives you guidance on how you can safely carry out some basic steps of fault finding, however should you require further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us.

FAULT FINDING

Useful tips:

  • Don't just switch sockets off - unplug the items too. Not all socket outlets have double pole switches and will not isolate the faulty equipment.
  • To identify sockets on the faulty circuit, go round all the sockets in the property and use a table lamp or something similar to identify if the each socket is live. If a socket is dead, it is likely to be on the faulty circuit.
  • Ways to work out what time the power went off - check mechanical timers (sometimes used on immersion heaters or table lamps) as these will have stopped at the time the power tripped. Had the boiler come on when it was programmed to? Did the washing machine/tumble dryer/dishwasher start their cycle if on time delay?

Important information which will be helpful for your electrician:
  • What time did the RCD/RCBO trip?
  • What appliances or equipment were in use at the time? Eg kettle, washing machine, dishwasher, immersion heater.
  • Do you have any outside accessories such as sockets, pond pumps, lighting etc?
  • Was any work / DIY being carried out when the RCD/RCBO tripped? Could cables have been damaged by screws or nails?
  • Has this happened before? If so, have you noticed any patterns regarding the time of day, weather or things in use
  • Have you had any problems with water leaks or vermin in the property?
It would also be useful if you can find any electrical documentation (eg Electrical Installation Certificates, Electrical Installation Condition Reports, circuit charts) for reference.
